Something I look forward to every year is a trip to the north shore. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been, just a few hours from where I live. We try to take a long weekend up north in the fall. This year a full weekend didn’t work out, so we decided to just take a day.
There are several great places to visit along the north shore. Duluth is a very cool city with lots of great shops and restaurants. I’ve loved visiting Canal Park since I was a child. Split Rock lighthouse is fun to visit, Grand Marais is a beautiful town. The list goes on and on. When we went up yesterday we decided to head straight to Gooseberry State Park for some exploring.
One benefit of just visiting for a day was being able to bring Harvey with us. He loves being with us outside and it was fun to have him along, even if he did get muddy. We were lucky we got muddy instead of snowy, I guess. In my mind it is still solidly fall, but on Friday there was lots of snow. It was mostly gone for our hike however. And the chillier temps meant there were very few people around, which was nice.
We spent the day hiking, eventually stopping at a rocky beach that leads out to Lake Superior to watch huge waves roll in. It was startling and beautiful. Watching the powerful water crash over the rocks was by far my favorite part of the day.
We ended our trip at Castle Danger Brewery, where we played Uno and had a few drinks with a friend. It was the perfect day trip to start the wrap up of fall, my favorite season.
